Sporting pip Waterhouse with late winner

TOLL GATE, Clarendon — Jamoly Powell scored a delightful late winner as Sporting Central Academy (SCA) climbed the Red Stripe Premiership table with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Waterhouse yesterday at Brancourt.
Waterhouse were the dominant team for long periods and deservedly went ahead on minute 23 through Jermaine Anderson's low, right-footed strike.
Sporting, much improved after the break, were gifted an equaliser when a rare Richard McCallum blunder allowed Francois Swaby to tap into an empty net just past the hour.
Powell, an 86th-minute substitute, then completed the unlikely turn-around for his side deep into stoppage time with an immaculately-placed shot to the top right corner of McCallum's goal.
It was a real heartbreak moment for the visiting Waterhouse contingent who could only watch in disbelief as their Sporting counterparts celebrated the goal which earned them their fourth win and 13th point of the season.
Sporting's coach Nigel Stewart, in his pre-match comments, pinpointed this fixture as an early measuring stick for his team's championship credentials, and he was definitely given an insight.
They were completely thrown off their game from the onset with a congested Waterhouse midfield and stout defending limiting them to long balls over the top instead of their customary snappy, short passes.
"We are used to playing well and losing games. Today we didn't play up to scratch, but I am thankful for the point," Stewart told the media in his post-game interview.
The result means Waterhouse, who were hunting their second win of the season, remained ninth on five points after suffering their third defeat in six games.
"We are just unlucky," coach Donovan Duckie said. "We are playing really well but just having a bad run at the moment."
