Strong WI Women squad to tackle S'Africa

Sunday, December 23, 2012

ST JOHN'S, Antigua (CMC) — Guyanese opener June Ogle has earned a recall in a strong 13-member West Indies Women's squad announced for the first three One-Day Internationals of the five-match series against South Africa next month.

The 26-year-old has played a single ODI — against India in January last year — and returns to a set-up packed with the stars who took the side to the semi-finals of the World Twenty20 Championship in Sri Lanka last October.

As expected, Trinidadian Merissa Aguilleira has retained captaincy of the side and she said the unit was brimming with confidence for the January 7-20 series.

"We have a good team and we are really focused on the upcoming series against South Africa. We have done very well against them in recent years and as a team we strongly believe we can beat them in this series as well," Aguilleira said.

The squad includes the superb Stafanie Taylor, the reigning ICC Women's Player-of-the-Year, along with the powerful Deandra Dottin, veteran Juliana Nero and the hard-working all-rounder Shanel Daley.

Off-spinner Anisa Mohammed, the leading wicket-taker in West Indies Women history with 85 wickets from 54 ODIs, leads the attack that also features seamers Shakera Selman and Subrina Munroe.

Warner Park hosts the first two ODIs on January 7 and 9, before the series moves to Windsor Park in Dominica for the last three matches on January 12, 13 and 15.

The Twenty20 doubleheader will be staged in St Lucia at the Beausejour Cricket Ground on January 19 and 20.
