T&T fightback after Hinds' imposing 162 gives Ja 356

AN unbeaten half-century from captain Daren Ganga inspired Trinidad & Tobago to 172-3 in reply to Jamaica’s first innings score of 356 on the second day of the West Indies Cricket Board Regional four-day match at Sabina Park.

The right-hander, who scored three centuries in his 48 Test matches between 1998 and 2008, batted patiently to end yesterday on 75 from 167 balls inclusive of nine fours.

He shared in a crucial second-wicket stand of 84 with talented opener Llendl Simmons, after pacer Andrew Richardson had sent back Tishan Maraj with the score on 17.

Simmons struck five fours and a six in his 56 from 111 balls before he was trapped leg before wicket in fast bowler Jerome Taylor's second spell.

Jason Mohammed (13) partnered with Ganga briefly before he wafted at a short ball from Richardson and edged through to Chadwick Walton.

Any chance of Jamaica making further inroads late in the day was thwarted by solid batting from Sherwin Ganga, who joined his brother Daren and shared in an unbroken stand of 28 for the fourth wicket.

Both will resume today at the scheduled 10:00am start.

Richardson was Jamaica's top wicket-taker with 2-34 off 12 overs.

Earlier, the Trinidadian bowlers fought back gallantly to rein in the Jamaicans from their overnight 297-5 to have them dismissed for 356.

Left-hander Wavell Hinds remained undefeated on 162 from 266 balls and hit 12 fours and eight sixes.

Hinds shared in a sixth-wicket stand of 149 with David Bernard Jr (70) before the latter was given out leg-before to leg-spinner Imran Khan in the morning session.

Wicketkeeper/batsman Chadwick Walton and Taylor followed soon after as the Jamaican lower order faltered.

In their quest to wrap up the innings, Trinidad & Tobago took the second new ball and had immediate success.

Seamer Rayad Emrit sent Richardson's middle stump cart-wheeling several metres and then had last man Odean Brown caught at slip the very next ball to dismiss the Jamaicans and leave Hinds stranded at the other end.

Emrit ended with 3-43 from 12 overs and five balls and will be on a hat-trick if Jamaica bat a second time.
