Friday, March 12, 2010

CAMPION College copped two titles and Meadowbrook and Calabar High one each in the finals of the ISSA table tennis competition at Hy-Performance Centre, Hope Pastures on Tuesday.

Campion won both the Boys Under-16 and Girls Under-16 crowns. Calabar retained the Boys Under-19s, while Meadowbrook captured the Girls Under-19 title.

In the Under-19 Boys final, Calabar edged former champions Wolmer's Boys' 3-2 to make it two wins in a row.

Meadowbrook defeated Immaculate Conception High 3-1 in the girls Under-19 final for their first such triumph.

Campion clipped two-time defending champions Kingston College 3-2 in the Boys Under-16 final and in the girls equivalent, Campion beat Ardenne 3-1.

It was a maiden victory for Campion in both categories, which were added to the competition three years ago.

Campion, Calabar and Meadowbrook are coached by Sandra Riettie, Don-Walker-Petinaud and Matthew Dawson respectively.

ISSA's director for table tennis, Richard Thompson, who is also the principal of Titchfield High, told the gathering he was happy to be on board to revive the competition, and took in plenty of the action.

In the play-offs for third-place trophies, KC trounced St Jago 4-1 in the Boys Under-19; Wolmer's Boys' crushed Hillel 4-1 in the Under-16 equivalent, and Wolmer's Girls' stopped Hillel 3-1 in the girls Under-16.

In the Boys Under-19 final, Calabar won the first two matches as Darren Salmon outlasted Milo Cai 3-2 and Mark Phillips crushed Norman Ho 3-0.

Michael Cai then overpowered Dexter Smith 3-0 to win one for Wolmer's Boys'. And in the fourth match, "C" player Darrel Gordon shocked "A" player Kareem Flowers 3-2 to secure the title for Calabar.

In the fifth match which was of academic interest only, Johnathan Higgins stopped Dimitri McGregor 3-1 for the final 3-2 score.

National champion Yvonne Foster won two matches for Meadowbrook in the Girsl Under-19 final, turning back Vanessa Moo Young 3-1 and overwhelming Antoneil Kirkland 3-0.

Sharie Phipps stunned Kirkland 3-2 for Meadowbrook's third triumph as Melanie Smithson outplayed Trisha Champagnie 3-1 to pull one back for Immaculate.

In the finals of the Girls Under-16, Campion's captain Kristen McKenzie won two matches for her team, tagging both Kerry-Ann Whyte and Ashli Alexander by similar 3-1 scores.

Janique Lee eased past Ann-Kaye Jones 3-0 for Campion's third win, as Ardenne's captain Alexander cruised past Rebecca Harris 3-0 for her team's consolation victory.

Defending champions KC won the first two matches in the boys Under-16 , with Jordan Hazle crushing Bryan Ho-On 3-0 and Glen-Ross McDonald outplaying Jordan McKenzie 3-1.

Then Simon Ho-On trounced Dexter Mears 3-0, Derek Walcott overpowered Ryan Ried 3-0 and Peter-John Goldson tagged Korey Moulton 3-1 for Campion's 3-2 triumph, and the title.
