The Guv to rule in midweek feature
BY HURBUN WILLIAMS Observer writer
Wednesday, September 26, 2012
THE Guv, who failed to start in an Overnight Allowance race 11-days ago because of lameness, goes post-ward as the 6-5 favourite in the $715,000 Jockey Club Stakes at Caymanas Park today.
The Overnight Allowance race for native-bred three-year-olds upward over 1,400m is scheduled for approximately 5:00 pm, with first post at 1:45 pm.
Facing a much weaker field than in the Jockey Club Stakes, The Guv, who steps two classes down, is expected to have little difficulty in registering his first win of his six-year-old season.
A very versatile grey horse by Royal Minister out of Havasac (Robyn Dancer) and bred by Stephen Chung, WP Valentine Chung & Howard Hamilton, The Guv is trained by Spencer Chung for owners by WP Valentine Chung & Howard Hamilton & Robert Chung.
After going lame just before the start of his last race, The Guv was back in training and if feeling no ill effects of his recent lameness, then this should not be a race although good runs are expected from Sir South, The Right Marker and possibly, Rolex.
This is the The Guv's third start for the season and his easiest with jockey Shane Ellis remaining on board. In his only race for the season before lameness set in on last, The Guv looked in appealing form behind the speedy trio of stablemate Saint Cecelia, Noon It Is and Rio Cobre going 1,100m.
Without really going guns, he finished fourth in the five-horse field in a time of 1:06.0. This was after Saint Cecelia had decimated the field by three lengths in a time of 1:04.3.
Now going farther and nothing as exciting as the aforementioned trio, The Guv looks all set to present the trainer/jockey combination of Spencer Chung and Ellis with another win for the season.
While the penultimate seventh race looks a one-sided affair, the closing eighth race where the $715,000 Track Price Plus "Dig-Out Handicap" Race #5 is slotted has all the trappings to be the most competitive on the eight-race card. With the exception of a few, almost any number among the 14 starters can play.
