Thomas lands triple jump silver at indoor meet

NINETEEN-year-old six-footer Shaneika Thomas, a Vere Technical past student now competing for San Diego University, logged a collegiate-leading and personal best 13.19 metres to place second in the triple jump at the Bronco Invitational in Nampa, Idaho last weekend.

American Whitney Liehr, who was at Stanford University, won with 13.21 metres.

The 2008 Carifta Games Under-17 champion, Thomas improved on her previous best 12.98 metres achieved at the NCAA Division One Indoor Championships last year when she placed ninth.

Meanwhile, in the long jump, Thomas was fourth after measuring 6.04 metres. Jamesha Youngblood, an Oregon University standout, won with a mark of 6.34 metres, ahead of Stanford University's Arantxa King, 6.22 metres, and Brittni Dixon-Smith, 6.09m.

At the Iowa State Open, Jura Levy of Oklahoma Baptist University clocked 7.38 seconds to win the 60 metres.

Last year's Central American and Caribbean Championship 100m silver medallist, 21-year-old Levy outran American Dominique Kempel and Trinidadian Reyare Thomas of Iowa Central who clocked 7.58 and 7.61 seconds respectively for second and third place.

A member of Daegu World Championships 4x100m relay silver medallist quartet, Levy also won the 200m at the Iowa State Open with a time of 24.14 seconds, ahead of countrywoman and Lady Bison teammate Verona Chambers who timed 24.38 seconds.

Another Jamaican Peaches Roach, running unattached, finished third in a time of 24.56 seconds.

Patricia Hall, a World Youth Championship 400m hurdles bronze medallist, ran a season-best 52.73 seconds to place second in the 400 metres at the Governor Cup in Volgorad, Russia.

Russian Antonina Krivoshapka won in a world-leading 52.20 seconds, with another Russian Kseniya Vdovina finishing third in 53.53 seconds.

However Hall, 29, won the 200 metres in a season-best 23.60 seconds, eclipsing Ukrainian Mariya Ryemyen who ran a personal best 23.71 seconds and Russian Yuliya Katsura, third in 23.73 seconds.

At the New Mexico Cherry & Silver International in Albuquerque, Jilisa Grant of New Mexico Highlands University clocked a personal best 24.15 seconds to finish fourth overall in the 200 metres.

Nigerian Endurance Abinuwa of the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) posted a personal best 23.76 seconds to win the 200m overall, ahead of the British Virgin Islands' Karene King of Portland State University who ran 24.08 seconds.

Another Jamaican Shavine Hodges of Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona ran a season-best 24.15 seconds to finish third overall.

Twenty-two-year-old Grant leapt 6.14 metres for third in the women's long jump won by American Funmi Jimoh (6.45m), ahead of another American Brianna Glenn (6.26m).

At the New Balance Games in New York, Dominique Blake and Shevon Stoddart placed third and fourth respectively recording 53.76 and 54.14 seconds. Americans Fawn Dorr and Tiffany Williams finished one-two with times of 53.34 and 53.47 seconds respectively.

Meanwhile Melissa Hewitt of Ivy League's Cornell University clinched the long jump at Upstate Challenge in Ithaca, New York with a mark of 6.17 metres.

In fact, her Big Red teammates took the top four places, with Kristin Brandt and Rebecca Delong trailing the Jamaican with leaps of 5.56 and 5.54 metres.
