VCB's foundation to offer high school scholarship

Thursday, March 24, 2011

CLERMONT, Florida — Young Jamaican girls starting high school could start benefiting from an initiative by a foundation started by athletic star Veronica Campbell Brown.

The former Troy All-Age and Vere Technical star who was named UNESCO Champion for Sports Ambassador, announced the formation of the foundation in January at the RJR Foundation Sports Awards.

In an interview in Florida recently, Campbell Brown told the Observer that she was "very excited".

"The documentation process is now completed and we are now in the process of deciding on a launch (in Jamaica) and as we get closer we will have more information," she said.

Campbell Brown says the main goal of her foundation was "the upliftment of young women and we'll be giving scholarships and having a mentorship programme for those in need".

Despite her roots in Trelawny and Clarendon, she says the recipients of the scholarships would not be restricted to any one locale.

"We have some schools in mind where we will be recruiting girls from not just any one centralised area. We're trying to pick from as broad an area as possible," she said.

"We're targeting girls in need who can't afford to go to school, not necessarily athletes, just young girls in need," Campbell Brown added.

She said the one basic requirement to qualify for the scholarship is that the recipient should have gained a place in high school through the GSAT examination.

The tenure of the scholarship would be five years, Campbell Brown said, as "We plan to stay with them through five years of high school."
