Will Bolt run? - Usain doubtful but Blake set for C'Down Classic
BY PAUL A REID Observer writer
Saturday, February 11, 2012
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Fans attending today's eighth staging of the Camperdown Classic at the National Stadium in Kingston may have to make do with IAAF World 100m champion Yohan Blake as the star attraction as his training partner and double World Record holder Usain Bolt may not answer the starter's gun.
The Observer has learned that Bolt, who was due to open his season by running a 400m in his traditional opening run, was spotted in Germany two days ago and a photograph of him arriving in the European country was posted on the Internet.
When contacted Dennis Gordon, an official of the meet, said he was not aware of Bolt's situation and would not be commenting, but said fans would still be in for a treat with a day full of track and field.
Earlier, however, Cynthia Cooke, chairperson of the event, had confirmed interest from several overseas media houses including one from Denmark, Reuters, and CNN to name a few. "The Internet is filled with him (Bolt) opening at the Classic," said Cooke.
Over 70 schools and six clubs had been registered for the meet that is set to start at 8:00 am.
There will be competition in the 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m in all classes for boys and girls as well as open for men and women.
There will also be competition in the 400m hurdles open for male and female as well as the long jump, triple jump, high jump and pole vault.
There will also be the 4x100m relays that will offer a special prize for the high school sections with $100,000 to be shared among the top three finishers in the high school Class One boys and girls.
Winners will pocket $60,000, second place $25,000 and third, $15,000.
Meanwhile, Camperdown past student Margaret Byfield-Lawrence, who excelled at netball, will be this year's honoree.
Byfield-Lawrence first represented Jamaica at age 15 on the Under-19 team and made her senior debut at the 1996 Caribbean Championship.

@ Anthony II, I hear you.
And another mindboggling thing the Camperdown classics is, why is this supposed to be a Camperdown thing but you hear nothing of any one from Camperdown? Why don't they call it the Past C'Down Classics?

So, we all jump up and get excited and talk, talk, talk, all talk, about how we can capitalize on sports and our sports personalities and market sports and all that. And we cannot even confirm for the world (most of whom--media houses and journalists, for example--do not make plans at the last minute) who will or will not take part in an event that we organize; we do not even know, or seem keen to know. And then we talk, talk, talk, and talk some more about how we will profit from sports!
