Windwards pip Guyana to win one-day title
Thursday, August 30, 2012
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — Windward Islands captured the Regional Under-19 one-day title when they defeated Leeward Islands by six wickets in their final round match here yesterday.
Starting the final round 9.5 points adrift of leaders Guyana, the Windwards accumulated a remarkable 4.5 bonus points to dramatically emerge winners.
They finished on 35 points, with Guyana, who drew a bye for the final round, one point back in second.
Opting to bat first at Kensington Oval, the Leewards were bundled out for 147 off 44.3 overs with nine of the 10 wickets taken by the Windwards seamers, allowing them to pick up precious bonus points.
The Windwards then raced to their target off 36.1 overs with Taryck Gabriel stroking an unbeaten 60.
Wet conditions ensured that the two other final round fixtures were abandoned without a ball bowled.
Barbados were due to play Jamaica at Bayfield, while ICC Americas and Trinidad were scheduled to face off at Pine Basin.
The Windwards won with 35.0 points ahead of Guyana on 34.0, Jamaica on 27.5, Barbados on 21.5, T&T, 13.5, Americas, 13.5 and the Leewards on 8.0.
