Melbourne, St Thomas eliminated from Wray & Nephew Masters T/20 cricket
At the end of the seventh week of matches in the Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum Masters T/20 Cricket Competition on Sunday at Kensington Cricket Oval, Melbourne from Zone A and St Thomas form Zone B were eliminated after losing to MICO Masters and Wray All Stars, respectively. Melbourne lost three of their four matches, while St Thomas lost all four matches.
Defending champion MICO defeated Melbourne by 17 runs after making 137 for 3 in 20 overs with Orville Pennant making 54, and Howard Harris, 40, contributing most runs, while Dennis Gordon and Dirk Dewar bagged one wicket each. MICO batted slowly, losing their first wicket at 84, but kept their cool in the face of tight bowling from Melbourne.
Melbourne started steadily to reach 93 for the fall of the first wicket and looked set to win, but ended their innings at 120 for 8 in 20 overs. Dillon Ebanks, 48, and Larry Crighton, 45, were the top scorers for Melbourne. Jubert Ellington, who took 4 for 23, and Orville Pennant, 2 for 14, were the pick of the bowlers.
The second match saw Wray All Stars battering minnow St Thomas by 73 runs after making 185 for 3 in 20 overs, to remain on course for a semi-final spot. Terrence Corke, 42, and Wayne Lewis, 40, opened the batting and raced to 66 for 1, then Nehemiah Perry came in and blasted a quick-fire 53 not out. The wickets went to Carol James, 2 for 31, and Denneth Jones, 1 for 24.
St Thomas could only manage 112 for 7 in 20 overs after losing their first wicket with just 5 runs on the board and continued losing wickets throughout the innings. Keith Edwards, 38, Mark Penn, 27, and Kenneth Thompson, 18, got into double figures. Victor Forrest was the most successful bowler getting 3 for 21 in 4 overs.
Action continues next week Sunday with undefeated May Pen Lions of Zone A facing Portmore, and Domtar take on Aerotel/Kool 97FM in a Zone B derby. Both matches will be played at the Kensington Cricket Oval in Kingston.
