Three members of the horse racing fraternity received their national awards from Governor General Sir Patrick Allen at the annual awards ceremony at King's House yesterday.

The three who received awards for their contribution to the development of horse racing and sports in general were owner/breeder Alexander Hamilton; Paul Hoo, chairman of the Supreme Ventures Group Limited, the sole promoter of horse racing in Jamaica; and legendary jockey George HoSang.

Hamilton and Hoo received the Order of Distinction in the rank of Commander (CD) while HoSang was given the Order of Distinction in the rank of Officer (OD).

Hamilton has been a part of the racing industry since the 1950s and was primarily responsible for donating the land on which the present Caymanas Park is located in Portmore, St Catherine. Hamilton also played a huge part in the actual planning of Caymanas Park which became the new home of horse racing in 1959, replacing Knutsford Park and other minor tracks across the island. For a long time Hamilton was one of the top breeders in the country through his Caymanas Estates Ltd.

Hoo has been a long-standing owner of thoroughbred horses including Bruce On The Loose, the filly Princess Popstar, who became the first two-year-old to be crowned Horse of the Year, and Buzz Nightmare, among others.

On March 7, 2017, the Hoo-led company, Supreme Ventures Racing and Entertainment Limited, took over the promotion of horse racing in Jamaica after a successful divestment bid. Supreme Ventures Limited operates the lottery and several other games of chance, and strongly supports a number of sporting endeavours in the country, mainly through sponsorship.

“Today (yesterday), I am really, really honoured. To be given an award by your country for doing something you love is a privilege beyond comprehension.

“And for me to sit with other awardees, some who have given yeoman service to the development of Jamaica, and others who were brave and courageous in saving the lives of others, was a special experience for me and one which I will always cherish.

“I would also like to thank my immediate family and friends for their strong and unwavering support over the years,” Hoo said after receiving his award.

HoSang, regarded by many as the best ever to sit in the saddle at Caymanas Park, was overwhelmed when the Supreme Racing Guide spoke with him after he received his award.

“It's the most prestigious award I have accomplished in my whole life. I've had several different awards and trophies and championships and certificates from the racing industry, local and international. But this one, I'm being honoured by my country and I feel so proud of it.”

He expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister and the Governor General for his award. “I thought I had seen my last milestone in life when I saw my grandson born last year, and now this came along. This is like a lifetime achievement award for me, so I just feel great.”
