As the 2018 two-year-old season continues to unfold, a new dimension was added to the mix by trainer Wayne DaCosta's importee American Invader .

The filly, after some exciting gallops in the mornings, scored a workable victory at Caymanas Park on Saturday last, September 1, 2018. American Invader landed the Terromoto Trophy feature over five furlongs (1,000m) on the round course.

In a gate-to-wire performance, American Invader, owned by Carlton Watson and ridden by Omar Walker, covered the distance in a decent 1:00.0, defeating five other juveniles. The winning margin was a length and a half.

“She [ American Invader] was able to get an early lead and Omar [Walker] basically just relaxed her and ask her to run two furlongs out. When he asked her to run, she gave her all and was able to open up and hold to the end.

“So far, especially in the mornings American Invader is looking like a sprinter in the making and she has a lot of class, so we will see what happens later on in the year,” DaCosta said.

American Invader broke well and after a couple of strides assumed the early lead over Baltusrol (Dick Cardenas) and Moms Treasure (Dane Dawkins) heading towards the half-mile marker through an opening quarter in 22.4.

Cruising when coming into the lane with the half-mile split in 46.1, American Invader kicked clear of Baltusrol, who tried to challenge in deep stretch, and the far-striding foreigner increased the tempo and moved further away. American Invader was then seen to be coming back in the final 50 metres of the race but had enough to take home the trophy.

Moms Treasure finished strongly against the inside rails, making up ground on the winner for second money, two lengths in front of Baltusrol, with Divine Lexie (Jerome Innis) completing the frame in the Restricted Allowance event.

“The performance was okay by American Invader who was running for the first time. She is pretty young still and has more room for improvement. We don't as yet [know] if she is a speedster or she is a staying horse as yet, but what we know is that she is a fast horse. This is the first one, and so let's see where she goes from here,” Watson said.
