St Jago High moved one step closer to a second-round berth in the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/FLOW Manning Cup competition, after they hammered lowly Ascot High 7-0 in their Group F clash at Spanish Town Prison Oval yesterday.

The victory was set up by a brace each from Shaquille Wright (14th, 63rd) and Kirk Samuda (49th, 55th). The other goals came from Andre Thomas (11th), Rayjaun Sinclair (30th) and Tahj McInnis (89th).

The win pushed the Davion Ferguson-coached team up to 14 point, but they remain in third behind leaders Holy Trinity, who slammed Edith Dalton James 12-0 to move to 22 points.

Clan Carthy occupy second spot on 15 points after their 2-1 win over Jose Marti Technical, but face a tough task progressing to the next round as St Jago have a game in hand.

Both teams were meeting for the first time after their first contest was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances, but St Jago were in a no-nonsense mood and opened the scoring from the penalty spot. Thomas converted the kick after Tahj Grant was brought down inside the area.

Wright doubled the lead three minutes later with a stinging, left-footed effort which rattled the back of the net. Samuda then threatened to extend the lead with two successive well-struck shots, but both came back off the upright.

Sinclair made no mistake on the half-hour mark when he finished off a cross from Darnell Williams deep inside the area to make it 3-0 at the break.

The Monk Street-based boys wasted little time to push further ahead as Samuda finally got on the scoresheet four minutes after the resumption.

And the bustling striker notched a second six minutes later when he expertly headed home from close range.

With the scoreline already overwhelming, Ferguson used the opportunity to utilise his fringe players, but that didn't stop the goals from coming. Wright completed his brace when he slotted home from a goalmouth melee; and McInnis capped off the emphatic win with a well-taken free kick.
