Antigua to host big birthday bash for Sir Viv

Saturday, February 25, 2012

ST JOHN'S, Antigua (CMC) — Sir Vivian Richards said he was humbled by the decision to honour him with a week of activities leading up to his 60th birthday.

The West Indies legend will celebrate his birthday on March 7 and officials have chosen to celebrate his life with a number of activities during the week.

The week culminates with an official banquet hosted by the Government of Antigua & Barbuda, where cricket historian and University of the West Indies professor Sir Hilary Beckles will deliver the feature address.

West Indies fast bowling legend Reverend Wes Hall and other cricket greats will also attend the event.

There will also be an invitational golf tournament at the Cedar Valley Golf Club that will feature three of the four other living cricket knights — Sir Garfield Sobers, Sir Ian Botham and Sir Richard Hadlee.

Sir Everton Weekes, another cricket knight, will also be in Antigua for the week of activities that will also include a church service.

There will also be a Breast Cancer Awareness event, featuring a walk from the historic Antigua Recreation Ground, where Sir Viv made the fastest Test hundred, to the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground a few miles outside of the capital.
