Callaghan sends Bowens atop Clarendon ML

CHAPELTON, Clarendon — Daniel Callaghan scored his league-leading fifth goal of the season to send New Bowens atop the Clarendon/Captain's Bakery Major League following a 2-1 win over Wood Hall on Monday.
The former Garvey Maceo midfielder notched the winner in minute 70, just eight minutes after Lloyd Rhoden pulled Wood Hall level.
Maxwell Patrick had given Bowens a 50th-minute lead after the sides failed to break the deadlock in the opening 45 minutes at the Turners Oval in Chapelton.
The win was Bowens' (16 points) fifth of the campaign and it was good enough to take them one point clear of second-placed Jamalco, who have a game in hand, and five clear of the regressing Wood Hall.
The North-Central Clarendon side who were facing defeat for the second game in-a-row could even slip further behind in the race for the mid-season final and overall title chase, should fifth-placed Milk River (11), Jamalco or Four Paths win their games in hand.
It is a shocking turn of events for the former champions who up to two games ago boasted a perfect defensive record and looked genuine championship contenders.
However, with matches against cellar teams Longwood and Hazard still to come before the incentive final, Wood Hall could well have a say in how the first trophy of the season is decided.
Meantime, Rock River moved within six points of the leaders after prevailing 1-0 over fellow mid-table outfit Original Hazard in Cross.
Kashieve Graham scored the lone goal in the 67th minute as Rock River improved to 10 points, but remain sixth.
Despite suffering their fourth defeat of the season, Hazard stayed seven points clear of the drop zone.
