Dacres makes qualifying mark for World Youths

CALABAR'S Federick Dacres, who is recovering from insomnia, threw 18.42 metres for second place in the Class I shot at the Gatorade Youngster Goldsmith meet at GC Foster yesterday and achieved the required qualifying mark for the World Youth Championship later this year.
Dacres finished behind teammate Ashnia Miller (18.62), but was pleased he has now reached both qualifying marks for the discus and shot put.
"I fell off course because I had this problem of insomnia which I'm just recovering from. My body was kind of giving up. I haven't really gone fully but I'm ok," he told the Sunday Observer.
Dacres surpassed the qualifying mark of 18m which saw him annihilate his rivals in the Class I discus with 58.08.
Teammate Oshane Chambers was second with 49.86 ahead of Munro's Jevaughn Shaw, 46.38.
Meanwhile, Kingston College's (KC) Stefan Fennell and Tiffany James of Papine High turned in arguably the best performances of the meet.
Fennell, the reigning Carifta and Boys Championship winner, clocked 13.89 seconds -- the fastest of the season.
Two weeks ago at the Central Hurdles and Relays, the smooth Fennell lowered the record from 14.23 to 13.91 and showed he is in the rich vein of form.
Fennell won ahead of the Wolmer's pair of Kevaughn Allen (14.03) and Yannick Hart (14.15).
James, running in Class III, won the 400m time final in 56.16 seconds, ahead of Davia Smith of Edwin Allen, 57.96, and Holmwood's Shanice Cohen, 58.29.
James' time was faster than the winning Class II time of 58.26 done by Shantae Green of Holmwood and just outside the Class I winner, Shawnette Lewin of Edwin Allen, 56.00.
Omari McDonald of Hydel was quickest in the Boys' Class I 400m time final, running 49.02 ahead of Andrae Green of Wolmer's, 49.76, with KC's Devaughn McKnight third in 49.89.
Devaughn Baker of Jamaica College (JC) captured the Class II Boys' 400m in 50.23 ahead of Malcolm Campbell, 50.64.
With the absence of KC's outstanding 12-year Jevaughn Mattison, Dinthill's Damian Dixon was quickest in Class III with 52.70, ahead of the KC pair of Jean-March Smith and Jerome Lodge in 53.27 and 53.49, respectively.
Mattison had previously run 51.6 to lower Usain Bolt's record at Kirkvine a few weeks ago, and dashed to 51.3 at the Queen's/Grace Jackson meet last week.
World Junior representative Janieve Russell of Holmwood easily won the Class I Girls' 400 hurdles in 59.91 -- the only athlete under the one-minute barrier.
Edwin Allen's Terrian Williams was second in 1:01.93 ahead of Junielle Baker of GC Foster, 1:02.30.
Calabar's Kemar Williams won the Boys' 400 hurdles in 52.80 ahead of Jamie Demns of STETHS, 53.48.
The outstanding Michael Oharo of Calabar, in his first year Class II, was pipped in the 110 hurdles by Tyler Mason of JC, 14.00. Oharo was second in 14.09 and Wolmer's Jaheel Hyde, the son of football icon Lenworth Hyde, third in 14.47.
Kellion Knibb of St Jago won the Class I discus with 48.00, ahead of the 45.01 from Sasha-Gay Marston of Edwin Allen.
Holmwood grabbed one-two in Class II with Natanya McNeish and Gleneve Grange in 39.82m and 39.52m.
