First Mystic Mountain Invitational meet runs off today
Saturday, February 04, 2012
A series of track and field development meets are scheduled for Drax Hall Sports Grounds, St Ann, over the next three months.
The first meet on the schedule is the Mystic Mountain Invitational set for today with the first race at 9:30 am.
Mystic Mountain Executive Director Mike Drakulich is concerned about the lack of meets being held on the north coast. "In an effort to keep pace with the rest of the island we as a north coast community have to do more to provide sporting opportunities that our young student/athletes deserve."
Today's competition will be for both male and female in four age categories: Primary and Junior High, High School, Clubs and Institutions and Masters. Events to be contested in the Mystic Mountain meet include 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1,500m, 3,000m and 4x200m relay.
The meet is being promoted by Mark Winzenried, a former world-class 800m runner, who still holds the junior world record for the 600m after 44 years.
Winzenried, a part-time resident of St Ann since 1978, is also the former world record holder in the indoor 1,000 yards and a three-time NCAA National 800 champion while at the University of Wisconsin.
As an agent/manager, Winzenried ushered Merlene Ottey on to the international circuit in 1981 and later represented several Olympians, including Michael Johnson.
The series will continue with the second meet scheduled for February 18 at the same venue. The development meets are open to newcomers to the sport, as well as seasoned veterans. Participants will be charged an entry fee of $250.
