GM lauds H'View's DPL triumph
BY SANJAY MYERS Observer staff reporter
Friday, May 07, 2010
FRESH from their championship-clinching victory in Wednesday's round of matches in the Digicel Premier League, jubilant Harbour View general manager Clyde Jureidini has praised the work by the club's administration, coaching staff and players.
The east Kingston- based club beat Boys' Town 2-1 to push to an unassailable seven-point lead over Tivoli Gardens, who went down by a similar score at Lynch Park, Portland.
With two rounds of matches remaining, the 'Stars of the East' are on 73 points, while their west Kingston rivals remain on 66 after their second straight loss.
Said Jureidini: "Winning the league is testimony that technically we're doing a lot of things right, starting with the leadership of club chairman Carvel Stewart, the other board members, the coaches and not least, the players.
"Senior players like Jermaine Hue, Lovel Palmer and Richard Edwards have held their own and young players like Montrose Phinn and Fabian Campbell have also done well," he added.
The general manager told the Observer he is pleased that Harbour View have joined the likes of Tivoli Gardens and Portmore United (formerly Hazard United) to have won the national title three times over the past 12 years.
"For the club it means a whole lot to join the elite group of clubs who have won three titles in the last few years. And we have won two in the last five years, so it's a special achievement," he said.
"Couple those accomplishments with the under-21s winning their third straight title and also with the successes of the under-15s and the under-17s, it shows that the various managers, coaches and players are on target," he added.
Harbour View had previously romped to championship glory in 1999-2000 and 2006-2007, while last season's champions Tivoli won in 1998-1999 and 2003-2004.
Portmore, who were a close second last season, had previously won in 2007-2008, 2004-2005 and 2002-2003.
When asked what went differently this season compared to their third-place finish in 2008-2009, Jureidini insisted that better organisation and execution of plans worked in their favour.
s Jureidini also lauded the resolve of the team to not lose their momentum this season after influential players, goalkeeper Dwayne Miller and captain Palmer, left the club after signing overseas contracts.
"Lovel and Dwayne left the club in March and yet they (the team) did well. The average age of the team is 22 years and yet they are playing so well and they are growing up (maturing) so fast," he added.
