Gay brings Carter to earth in Zagreb
... Spencer, Sinclair notch wins
Thursday, September 02, 2010
ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) — American sprinter Tyson Gay ran 9.92 seconds to win the 100 metres at the Zagreb World Challenge yesterday, leaving Jamaican rival Nesta Carter trailing in second in 10.07.
Gay and Carter are tied for the world lead at 9.78 — Gay reached it in London in August and Carter in Rieti last Sunday.
Michael Rodgers of the United States was third in 10.14 seconds.
Gay said he and Carter briefly clashed hands, preventing him from recording a quicker time.
"I expected a better time," he said, before admitting the collision was his fault. "I have to apologise to Nesta Carter," he added.
It was a victorious day for Americans in general.
Dwight Phillips easily scored another long jump victory with 7.85 metres. The Diamond League champ and triple world champion was closely followed by Luis Felipe Meliz of Spain with 7.84.
American Nick Symmonds scored victory in the men's 800 in one minute, 45.37, although the result was far below the personal best of 1:43.76 he reached in Rieti last Sunday. Mansoor Belal Ali of Borneo 0.28 seconds behind in second.
Justin Gaymon, also of the United States, won the men's 400 hurdles in 49.19 seconds, followed by Michael Bulheel of Belgium, 0.58 behind.
American Lolo Jones was back in form after a weak performance in Brussels, winning the 100 hurdles in 12.87. The two-time world indoor champion finished only 0.01 ahead of Canadian Perdita Felicien. Another American, Danielle Carruthers, was third.
The 200 was also claimed by an American, 2008 Olympian Marshevet Myers, who finished in 22.94. She was followed by Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie of the Bahamas, 0.14 behind.
Jamaican Kaliese Spencer, who won the Diamond League last week, added another victory in the 400 hurdles, finishing in 54.23. Zuzana Hejnova of the Czech Republic was second, 0.87 behind.
In the women's 800, Jamaican Kenia Sinclair won in 1:58.59 — her best time this season. Morgan Uceny of the United States was second in 1:59.49.
Croatian Sandra Perkovic, this year's European champion, won the discus with a throw of 65.56 metres.
