Reggae Boy Hyde scores for English club

CMC

Sunday, February 07, 2010

LONDON, England (CMC) -- Trinidadian striker Kenwyne Jones made a welcome return to form to snatch a point for Sunderland, while veteran Jamaican midfielder Micah Hyde pumped in his first league goal of the season as Barnet strolled to a comfortable win yesterday.

Playing in the English top flight, Jones notched his seventh goal of the season, but only his second in almost two months, as Sunderland came from behind to draw 1-1 with Wigan Athletic at home at the Stadium of Light.

In League Two, the 35-year-old Hyde put Barnet on the scoresheet first to lay the platform for an uncomplicated 3-0 victory over Aldershot Town and fire the club to their first win in 13 league outings.

Jones, recently at the centre of intense speculation over a possible move to giants Liverpool during the now closed January transfer window, had come under fire for his lack of form.

However, the lanky Jones answered his critics midway though the second half with the Tynesiders heading for yet another loss.

Right-back Alan Hutton fed winger Jordan Henderson, who played a fine cross into the box which was headed home by Jones at the near post in the 64th minute.

His strike cancelled out a superb 20th-minute strike from Frenchman Momo Diame, who produced a brilliant finish after Yugoslavia Lorik Cana had given the ball away.

The stalemate left Sunderland without a win in 11 games and four points above the relegation zone.

At the Underhill Stadium in north London, Hyde headed home his side's first goal after being set up by Albert Adomah in the 55th minute.

John O'Flynn then lashed a brace with goals in the 63rd and 85th minutes to ensure Barnet ended their near three-month drought without full points.
