J'can pole vaulter faces stern American test

MONTEGO BAY, St James — Jamaica's pole vaulter K'Don Samuels will face his biggest test of the Indoor season today when he joins some of America's top collegians at the Tyson Indoor Invitational at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Despite his less than adequate preparation, Samuels who is representing South Plains College in Texas, told the Observer earlier this week, he was aiming for at least a season's best.
After clearing 5.20m in his first indoors meet three weeks ago, the former Jamaica College athlete was third in a meet in Texas last weekend, clearing 5.18m.
Samuels said he was upset with his performance last week, but was hoping the presence of the top college athletes would be enough motivation for him to improve on the 5.20m from last month.
He says he is in the best shape of his career now and was hoping he will be able to show what he has been doing in training.
