Major Dixon elected VP of region's volleyball

NEWLY ELECTED second vice-president of the Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association (CAZOVA), Jamaica's Major Warrenton Dixon has been given responsibility for the technical programme of the regional body.

Major Dixon, who is also president of the Jamaica Volleyball Association (JaVA), said for the first year, he would inject "several foreign coaches into the national programmes across the region".

"However, my real desire over time is to see our regional coaches acquiring skill sets, knowledge base and experience comparable to these foreign coaches who we historically seek," he noted.

Major Dixon was elected to the CAZOVA post at the regional body's annual general meeting last Sunday in Trinidad & Tobago. All 14 national federation members attended the AGM.

President of the US Virgin Islands Volleyball Federation Lucille Hobson was elected first vice-president, while incumbent president, Mushtaque Mohammed of Trinidad & Tobago, was re-elected to office.

The CAZOVA congress, which was also attended by the Inter-national Volleyball Federation first vice-president and president of the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) Cristobal Marte Hoffiz, outlined developmental plans in the Caribbean in the last four years and the positive outlook for the next four years.

The regional heads had look at ways to give the Caribbean an "exceptionally better chance of qualifying for the World Championship".

According to Major Dixon "this plan will see the countries of the confederation participating in 20 events for women and 19 for men to fill six vacancies in the 2014 World Championship".

This, however, will exclude NORCECA teams that qualify for the World Championship through the world tour, such as the USA, Canada, and Mexico, Dixon explained.
