Manchester Lions retain Super Cricket League

BY SANJAY MYERS Observer staff reporter

Monday, July 12, 2010

Manchester Lions successfully defended their Jamaican Super Cricket League title after securing first innings honours against Melbourne Kangaroos yesterday at Derrymore Road.

Manchester won with a total of 25 points, while the St Catherine Saints and Melbourne finished on 24 points each.

After amassing 344 all out on Saturday, the visiting team restricted Melbourne from their overnight 135 for four and had them dismissed for 243.

Donovan Pagon made 74 off 178 balls, while Andre McCarthy made 70 from 122 balls for Melbourne. Fastbowler Jowayne Robinson also chipped in with 36. David Powell took five for 107 off 38 overs and five balls, while Jamie Merchant snared four for 67 from 29 overs.

After being asked to follow-on, Melbourne cantered to 200 for four before play was called off. Right-handed batsman Marlon Samuels stroked a silky 107 from 133 balls, including eight fours and three sixes, while dynamite wicketkeeper batsman Carlton Baugh Jnr hit 52 not out from 102 balls. Both had shared in a fourth-wicket stand of 140. Stephon Patterson finished with two for 28 off seven overs for Manchester.

At the Little London Sports Ground, the Saints had to settle for first innings points over Westmoreland Wizards after failing to force an outright win.

After dismissing Westmoreland for 203 on day one, St Catherine made a respectable 294, thanks to 75 from captain Tamar Lambert and 59 from Oraine Williams. The home team then denied St Catherine any hopes of snatching the title with crucial knocks from Adrian Thompson (58) and Andre Andrews (56) to help them to 267 all out.

St Catherine reached 39 for three at the close.

In another game at Sabina Park, St Elizabeth Warriors came from behind to beat Kingston Tigers by eight wickets.

After dismissing Kingston for 205 on day one, the visitors crumpled for 177 all out in their first innings. Westmoreland, however, bounced back to dismantle the Tigers for 113 and then romped to 141 for two to secure full six points.

The game between Trelawny Buccaneers and St Ann Cutters was postponed due to the unavailability of the Multi-Purpose Stadium. An investigation is pending, but the Observer understands that due to time constraints, the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) may decide not to set a rescheduled date.
