New Works are Kiddy Cricket kings

Saturday, February 04, 2012

New Works Primary were crowned champions of the WICB/Scotiabank inaugural Kiddy Cricket Festival held at Melbourne Cricket Oval recently.

After playing 45 preliminary zonal matches and inter-parish play-offs over a three-week period, the team topped 70 primary schools across the island when they beat Yallahs Primary at the grand final.

The event had a skills display session, which led to four hard-fought quarter-finals, two sizzling semi-finals and climaxed with the grand finale.

New Works' Kiddy Cricket coach, Ricardo Robinson, says that he is very proud of his students' performance as they practised hard and stayed focused throughout the competition. "Even with our hard work, I think the outstanding talent of our players gave us an edge over the other schools," he said.

"Getting into the finals, but when we saw Yallahs Primary on the day we know we could do it" explained Coach Robinson.

Holy Family Primary copped the title for the Most Disciplined Team; Brittany Moore from Port Antonio Primary was adjudged the Top Performing Female Kiddy Cricketer and Verdayne Smith of Old Harbour Primary bagged the Most Committed Coach award.

Members of New Works Primary celebrate with their trophy after winning the Scotiabank WICB Kiddy Cricket Festival after their victory over Yallahs Primary at Melbourne Cricket Club recently. Sharing the occasion are Scotiabank's vice-president of marketing Monique Todd (2nd right) and president of the Jamaica Cricket Association, Lindel Wright (rear).
