Pyne, Henry edge forward in world ranking
Saturday, February 25, 2012
IN the latest world ranking released following Jamaica's recent participation in the Thomas Cup regional preliminaries, Charles Pyne has moved up from 105th to 101st, his best ever position in the men's singles, while Gareth Henry has moved to 140th, up from 143rd.
In the Thomas Cup event, the Jamaican team did not move beyond the group stage where it lost to the USA and Guatemala before defeating Puerto Rico. The USA went on to win the competition with Guatemala second, Canada third and Brazil fourth.
The Jamaicans could consider themselves extremely unlucky to have been drawn in that group and therefore not have had the opportunity of facing Canada or Brazil.
Both Pyne and Henry harbour the ambition of representing Jamaica in the upcoming London Olympics. However, it is extremely unlikely, considering their current ranking, that both could make it to this year's Olympics. The qualification period, where a player's best 10 results over the previous year are used to determine his ranking, ends on April 29, 2012.
