Russell blasts maiden first-class ton for Jamaica

ALL-ROUNDER Andre Russell blasted a whirlwind 108 not out on the final day of the Supreme Ventures Sports Betting (SVBS) Jamaica Cricket Festival match as the home team drew with Ireland at Chedwin Park.

The 21-year-old, who was promoted to bat at number five, reached his maiden first-class century in just 60 balls and belted 10 sixes and seven fours in a total of 83 minutes at the wicket before both teams agreed to call off play early at 3:53 pm.

Earlier in the day, Ireland failed to add to their overnight 275 for nine in reply to Jamaica's first-innings score of 339 as the irrepressible Russell bowled last man Gary Kidd for just one. Russell finished with four for 41 from 14.3 overs, while West Indies youth legspinner Akeem Dewar took four for 81 from 23 overs on day two.

Jamaica's openers Danza Hyatt (53) and Brenton Parchment (83) again showed good form and batted positively throughout the first session to head into the lunch break at 91 without loss. However, soon after the break, the former was dismissed with 100 on the scoreboard.

Donavan Pagon (16) then joined Parchment as both put on 58 for the second wicket before they were dismissed in quick succession. A middle order wobble followed as Horace Miller (0), Carlton Baugh Jr (19) and Bevon Brown (12) all missed out on the chance to get batting practice on what remained a placid batting surface.

Russell, however, playing in only his eighth match at this level, did not allow the opportunity to pass by as he smashed the ball to all corners of the ground to cap off an outstanding all-round performance.

Both teams now turn their attention to their 50-over clash at Kaiser Sports Club in St Ann on Wednesday before the home team faces Canada at the same venue the following day.
