Over 75 to contest NCB Sporting Clay Open

By Howard Walker Observer staff reporter walkerh@jamaicaobserver.com

Tuesday, March 16, 2010

The 2010 National Commercial Bank (NCB) Capital Markets Sporting Clay Open will shoot off on Sunday, March 21 at the Caymanas Golf and Country Club starting at 10:00 am.

Over 75 of the islands best marksmen and women, including the legendary Jamaican Tony Kelly, who was inducted into the USA Hall of Fame, will compete in the eight categories.

This shooting tournament -- the only one of its kind in Jamaica -- will also see top guns Jeffrey Zaidie, Joey Chin, Leighton Sasso and president of the Jamaica Skeet Club, Brett Thwaites, in action.

Thwaites, in his capacity as president, thanked the sponsors for their involvement in the sport.

Said Thwaites: "The shooting sport in Jamaica, especially shotgun shooting, is far more lively than many people realised.

"In Jamaica we have something in the region of 1,500 registered range shooting hunters in our country. It is quite a sizeable amount for a country with a small population," he noted.

The Sporting Clay is the closest thing to bird hunting. There will be 14 stations where clays will be released from various heights simulating the flights of birds with the competitors shooting and scoring points with the number of hits.

Competitors will be equipped with fully stocked golf carts filled with Wata courtesy of Wisynco, to travel the course.

Sponsored by NCB to the tune of $250,000, the Sporting Clay Open in its second year, is set to become a staple of the Jamaican shooting calendar.

Vernon James, vice-president, sales and client services NCB Capital Market, said his organisation is once again pleased to partner the Jamaica Skeet Club in what is becoming a successful partnership.

Said James: "We believe in fostering healthy competition. This sport is an unusual sport in Jamaica, but it is enjoyed by many of our clients and we are expecting another fun-filled day and excitement."

Charmaine Wright, NCB's marketing manager, wealth and business services, said they are trying to make it a pleasurable day of fun for the entire family.

Said Wright: "The event is family friendly, as there will be children activities, including bounce-about for children and a mini spa for adults."

There will be a special feature during lunchtime period with a special media competition with the winner being awarded a prize from NCB.

There will be no fees for persons interested in watching, but persons interested in participating will have to pay the $3,500 entry cost in which registration starts at 8:00 am.

Who would pay to watch Zaidie, Thwaites et al shooting,
When they can watch the real shotters (in and out of uniform) on the nightly news for free.
