St Georges join Humble Lions in KO semis

BY HOWARD WALKER Observer staff reporter walkerh@jamaicaobserver.com

ST Georges FC joined Humble Lions in the semi-finals of the Flow Champions Cup All-Island Knockout competition after coming from behind to beat Harbour View 2-1 in extra time at the Compound on Wednesday night.

Portland-based St Georges actually played the last five minutes of the game with nine men after Danian Reid (110th) and Andrae Thomas (115th) were ejected after picking up second yellow cards.

But by that time they were leading 2-1 after Jomo Gordon had given Harbour View a 45th-minute lead when he collected a ball at the edge of the box and rifled home.

Seven minutes after the half-time break, the visitors drew level as Richardo Watson saw his shot creep under goalkeeper Michaud Barrett in the 52nd.

Watson was replaced by Damion Harwood in the 77th and he found the winner in extra time by lobbing Barrett in the 96th.

But after losing Reid with 10 minutes remaining, then Thomas five minutes from time, a depleted St Georges held firm and handled everything Harbour View threw at them in the closing minutes.

National defender Jermaine Taylor, fresh from his trial stint with DC United, along with brother Ricardo Taylor, Dwayne Holmes and Shawn Hunter, effected some stout defending to secure a good win.

In the dying minutes of extra time, St Georges goalkeeper Randal Huie went down for a 'mystery' injury, much to the displeasure of the Harbour View fans behind the goal.

To the surprise of many, an additional two minutes were added by referee Karl Tyrell to the already extra time being played.

St Georges' assistant coach Raymond Gordon thought his team can now win the competition after seeing off one of the favourites.

Said he: "We're moving on to the semi-final and we want to win this one. A lot of the dominant Premier League teams are longer in it and to come here and beat Harbour View... we want to carry this to the next level.

"This will give us the confidence and morale-booster to go on and do well... and we hope to have this trophy."

Meanwhile, Harbour View's Donovan Hayles said in a Knockout competition sometimes the games go against the odds.

Said Hayles: "We had territorial control of the game. We created numerous chances, but in a knockout game once you make a mistake and slip up, that's it."
