Super semis
IN what will be a rematch of last year’s all-island finals, Manning and daCosta Cup champions Jamaica College and St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) will go head-tohead in what should be one of two enthralling semi-finals of the LIME Super Cup at the National Stadium today.
Vice-president of marketing at LIME, Carlo Redwood, told the Jamaica Observer that he is expecting a huge turnout for the potentially mouthwatering encounters.
“I am a little bit disappointed that we don’t have more daCosta Cup teams in the competition at this point, but we are expecting a bumper crowd for these semi-finals.
It is going to be tough, you have a sleeper team in Holy Trinity; Wolmer’s, JC, and STETHS all tough teams; and we should see two exciting games,” he said. Jamaica College booked their spot in the semi-final after scoring a hardfought 2-1 win over rivals Hydel High to remain unbeaten in all competitions.
The Old Hope Roadbased boys could enter the contest without key midfielder Sheldon McKoy, but will be confident of once again getting the better of their opponents.
Coach Miguel Coley explained that his team will be “ready and focused” for the big clash and will not be aiming for a particular scoreline. “We want to win, it doesn’t matter the score for me,” he said.
Meanwhile, STETHS did just enough to get by a tough Camperdown outfit in their quarterfinal fixture and will again prove a formidable opponent as they seek to exact revenge on their urban area counterpart.
The Santa Cruz-based team will have to travel with a few tricks up their sleeve if they are to turn the tables, as the pride of the rural area schools remain solely in their hands. The early fixture between Wolmer’s Boys and Holy Trinity High should be an evenly contested encounter as both teams are in good goalscoring form.
Wolmer’s were a well-organised unit when producing a stunning performance to get the better of St George’s College 3-0 last week, and a repeat of that performance should see the Ludlow Bernard-coached boys easily surpassing their lesser opponents. However, Holy Trinity have been improving with every game played and are heading in the right direction.
The young South Camp Road-based team will be brimming with confidence after they made a 4-0 mockery of Garvey Maceo High who, through frustration, had to finish the game with eight players.
The Wolmer’s Boys versus Holy Trinity fixture is scheduled to get under way at 2:00 pm with the feature game of the double-header set for 4:00 pm.
