Muschette, Wolmer's cop volleyball wins

BY LIVINGSTON SCOTT Observer staff reporter

Wednesday, March 17, 2010

MUSCHETTE High are all but assured of a spot in the semi-finals of the ISSA Under-19 Boys volleyball tournament after scoring their second consecutive win -- against Old Harbour High -- at Old Harbour yesterday.

After beating Camperdown High 3-2 on Monday, the Trelawny school dismissed Old Harbour by the same score yesterday to take the lead in Group D with maximum six points.

In other games, Wolmer's Boys' scored a hard-fought 3-1 win over Knox College at The Mico University College, St Jago turned back Camperdown 3-1 and Mannings defeated Campion College 3-0.

Muschette lead their group by three points over St Jago High, although the latter have played a game less.

Camperdown, with two points from two games, are almost out of the running, while Old Harbour, with one point from one game, still have a chance if they can win their two remaining matches.

In the meantime, defending champions St Jago defeated Camperdown 3-1 to remain on track for the title. The home team won 25-12, 25-24, 12-25, 25-19 to hand Camperdown their second defeat in two days.

Meanwhile, Wolmer's Boys' opened Group C on a winning note at Mico. The Gregg Scott-coached outfit took the first set 25-17, but Knox rallied to win the second, 25-16, to tie the score.

But the home team, backed by a vociferous home crowd, stepped up their game to clinch the third set, 25-24.

Knox raced into a 5-0 lead at the start of the fourth, but Wolmer's moved to move within a point (10-9) before taking a 13-12 lead.

Knox did manage to retake the lead at 15-14, but Wolmer's again wrestled the advantage to lead 24-20, and although Knox staged another fightback to level the scores at 24-24, Wolmer's scored the decisive point to take the set.

The final set, was evenly contested for the most part, but Wolmer's eventually pulled away for a convincing 25-16 victory.

At Mannings, the home team won 25-20, 25-22, 25-11 and joined Wolmer's atop Group C on three points.

In the lone Boys' game played on Monday, Muschette came from behind to stop Camperdown 3-2.

Hosts Camperdown scored a 25-19 victory in the first set, but Muschette claimed the second, 25-24.

Muschette captured the third set 25-20 to take a 2-1 lead, but Camperdown tied the scores after taking the fourth, 25-23.

The fifth and deciding set went down to the wire, with the visitors emerging 15-14 winners at the end.

The Girls quarter-finals continue this afternoon with four more matches. Wolmer's Girls' face Camperdown at Wolmer's and Old Harbour face Muschette at Old Harbour in Group A.

In Group B, St Jago meet Knox at St Jago, and Alpha host Mannings. All matches start at 2:00 pm.
