Windies struggle again after top order collapse
NOTTINGHAM, England, (CMC) — West Indies found themselves on the ropes at lunch after suffering a now familiar top order collapse on the opening day of the second Test at Trent Bridge here today.
Winning the toss and batting, the Windies were facing another uphill batting at 84 for four.
Veteran campaigner Shivnarine Chanderpaul was leading another rearguard action for the tourists and was unbeaten on 19 along with the experienced Marlon Samuels who was on 14.
They have so far added 21 for the fifth wicket to halt the West Indies decline after they slipped to 63 for four, about 40 minutes before lunch.
Seamers Jimmy Anderson (2-22) and Stuart Broad (2-34) picked up two wickets apiece to destroy the top order.
West Indies were in trouble from as early as the fourth over of the morning when Adrian Barath was taken at third slip by Anderson off Broad without scoring at nine for one, attempting a forcing back foot stroke.
Vice-captain Kirk Edward’s wretched tour continues when he was bowled by Anderson for seven at 26 and Darren Bravo fell on the stroke of the first hour when he drove loosely at Anderson to give Graeme Swann a regulation catch at second slip at 42 for three.
Opener Kieran Powell played positively, stroking seven fours in 33 off 49 balls to add 21 with Chanderpaul for the fourth wicket.
The left-hander, however, became the fourth wicket of the session when he flirted with a wide ball from Broad to give Anderson his second catch of the morning at third slip.
