Young female golfer Isabelle Marley dies

Sunday, September 05, 2010

THE Honourable Olivia "Babsy" Grange, Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture has expressed shock and sorrow at the tragic death of Jamaica's leading junior female golfer Isabelle Marley.

Marley, arguably the best young female golfer in the Caribbean, died Friday in the Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay after she was found injured at the Cinnamon Hill Golf Course, Rose Hall in the second city.

According to reports, Marley was found injured on the ground with her golf cart a distance away. It appeared the golf cart had gotten out of control. She was taken to the Montego Hope Medical Centre, and later transferred to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where she died.

She was regarded as the most promising young female golfer in Jamaica and possibly in the Caribbean. She was regarded as very competent, even though she was still at a young stage of development.

Marley, a student of Immaculate Conception High School, finished third in the Girls 16-17-year-old at the six-day Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championship (CAJGC) in the Bahamas last month, helping the Jamaican team to finish fourth overall behind Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Trinidad and Tobago.

In 2002, young Marley represented Jamaica in the CAJGC in the Girls 12 and under division. She has also represented Jamaica at the Junior British Open Golf Championships in England.

Grange described her death as "an unfortunate loss of a very promising talented at a very tender age", and expressed condolences on behalf of the Government and the public at her tragic death.
