DEFENDING champions Bank of Jamaica (BOJ) got the better of former champions National Housing Trust (NHT) 31-26 as the 2017 Business House Basketball Association (BHBA) 3-on-3 Division One and Two leagues got under way at the National Arena last week Monday.

Winning coach Rohan Robinson said it was a very tough game against NHT.

“They were leading us 13-11 at the half-time break and we had to fight very hard all the way throughout the second half, especially in the last five minutes, before pulling off the win,” he said.

Robinson said it was rather strange playing NHT in their first game of the new season. “We did not want to face them so early in the competition as they are one of the best teams in the Division One League, but we have to go by the fixtures.”

Meanwhile, losing coach Lennox Lindo said it was a good game and they got the chance to win, as at one stage NHT were up by five points in the second half.

“We allowed Kwame Lawrence to get in some good shots in the last three minutes that gave them victory. Our key player Javon Bailey sustained a groin injury during the second half and that may have caused us to lose the game. He took no further part in the game with nine minutes remaining,” Lindo said.

He added that playing defending champions BOJ very early in the competition does not affect him so much. “I have no problem in such an early meeting as I can know very early where the team stands and what areas the team needs to improve.”

According to Lindo, all the teams in the Division One League are strong, but the ones to watch are Scotiabank, CARI-MED Limited, Sagicor Life Group 'A' and Ministry of National Security/Police.

Newly promoted Scotiabank, winners of the Division Two League title last season, made a winning start with a 29-19 win over Police.

Division One League team: National Commercial Bank (NCB) Financial Group beat Guardsman Group 20-15.

Division Two League results: Sagicor Life Group 'B' crushed Financial Services Commission (FSC) 40-11; JMMB Merchant Bank got the better of Pepsi/Celebration Brands 21-19; Jamaica National (JN) Group beat Yello Media/Global Directories 23-15; and Urban Development Corporation (UDC) defeated Industrial Commercial Development (ICD) Group 34-11.

Twenty-two teams are participating in the Business House 3-on-3 Division One and Two leagues. Division One comprises 12 teams, while Division Two has 10. The top eight teams from both divisions will qualify for the quarter-finals.

Both Scotiabank and Cari-Med Limited have been promoted by finishing one-two in the Division Two League final last year, while the newcomers are Ministry of Education (MOE) and Yello Media/Global Directories.

Division One: Bank of Jamaica, National Housing Trust, The Gleaner Company, Guardsman Group, National Commercial Bank (NCB) Financial Group, National Land Agency, Ministry of National Security/Police, Sagicor Life Group 'A', and Seprod Limited.

Division Two: AREOTEL/Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority (JCAA), Financial Services Commission (FSC), Industrial Commercial Development (ICD) Group, JMMB Merchant Bank, Jamaica National (JN) Group, Pepsi/Celebration Brands, Sagicor Life Group 'B', Unicomer/Courts Limited, Urban Development Corporation (UDC), Yellow Media/Global Directories.
