A six-wicket haul by left-arm spinner Odane Vassell placed Combined Universities and Colleges on top on day one of the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) two-day Super League contest against Eastern Tigers at Melbourne Oval yesterday.

On a day when 20 wickets fell, it was the Combined Universities that enjoyed the better of play, as Vassell nabbed 6-29 in nine overs in slaying the Tigers for a paltry 97.

He was supported by spin partners Oshane Walters (2-12) and Akim Fraser (2-19). The destructive combination was enough to get the job done for the home team, who were initially scheduled to host their games at The University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona.

Opener Garth Garvey (33) was the only batsman to make any meaningful contribution for the Tigers.

The spinner-friendly conditions at the Oval had earlier worked in favour of the Tigers as they did well to restrict the Combined Universities team to 171.

Captain Damion Jacobs continued his rich vein of form in this his final game before heading into the West Indies A camp in Antigua, as he followed up on his 5-30 in the opening contest to snare 4-49 in 20.2 overs.

The leg-spinner was once again supported by Paul Harrison with 3-57.

Bowling all-rounder Christopher Powell, with a top score of 49 including three fours and three sixes, along with Jon-Ross Campbell (32) and young Odane McCatty (29) were the only batsmen to offer resistance.

Batting a second time, the Combined Universities ended on 35-1, a lead of 109 runs heading into today's second day.

Chadwick Walton, on 18, and Captain Paul Palmer, on eight, will resume batting today at 10:00 am.

Scores: Combined Universities and Colleges 171 all out (51.2 overs) & 35-1 (9 overs); Eastern Tigers 97 all out (24.5 overs)

Central Titans held the upper hand against Northern Panthers in their feature contest at Chedwin Park.

Scores: Northern Panthers 115 all out (35.1 overs); Central Titans 209-7 (44 overs)

Alwayne Williams (43) and Kemar Anderson (36) were the best scorers for the Panthers against Odean Brown 4-19.

Trevon Griffiths (91) and Kennar Lewis (46) led the batting for the Titans, who will resume batting today.

In the other contest at Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium, Western Warriors were in control against the Southern Seals, who will resume batting today.

Scores: Western Warriors 159 all out (57.2 overs); Southern Seals 66-7 (24 overs)
