DEFENDING champions Excelsior High whipped Denham Town High 4-0 to retain their Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/Locker Room Sports Schoolgirls football title at the Spanish Town Prison Oval yesterday.

The title was the sixth for Xavier Gilbert, who has been coaching Excelsior for the past 16 years.

Chavelle Henry of Excelsior was the architect of their convincing victory as she scored two goals, in the 64th and 70th minutes to complete the season with 46 goals to her credit. Scoring the other two goals were Tarania Clarke in the 25th minute, and Jahmillia Ricketts in the 73rd minute.

Despite winning handsomely, Gilbert was not too impressed with his team's performance, especially in the first half. “I give them credit for the win and the hard work they have done throughout the season.

“The players, however, were a bit flat in the first half though they had total control of the game. It was just unfortunate that the Denham Town goalkeeper misjudged the ball and allowed it to score. Other than that, I was disappointed with the first-half performance from the players,” Gilbert said.

“The players played much better in the second half with more positive approach and had total control in the process to dominate and score three more goals,” he added.

Meanwhile, losing coach Kamathi-Nkrumah McKennon said the players wasted two easy chances that could have pushed them in a winning position.

“This is my third season with the Denham Town team and I have done well so far in those three years, placing third on two occasions and finishing second, and that is a great achievement for the players and also the school,” McKennon said.

“It was the first-ever final for Denham Town, and they did extremely well, although we conceded four goals, the most in a match this season,” he added.

It was a long floating free-kick from Clarke a little below the half-line in her own half that produced Excelsior's first goal. The ball floated over and a slow goalkeeper Shineka Powell allowed the ball to bounce between her legs and into an empty goal.

Henry scored the second goal with a header to the back post from a corner kick taken on the right by Clarke in the 64th minute. Henry made it 3-0 in the 70th minute from a floated free-kick just outside the penalty box with another header, before Ricketts sealed the issue with a 73rd-minute goal from a goal-mouth melée to secure a 4-0 win.

Meanwhile, Lennon High defeated St Jago High 5-4 on penalties after both teams had played to a 1-1 draw at full time. No extra time was played as the game went straight into penalties.

Moesha McLaughlin scored for St Jago in the 20th minute with Peterkaye Green equalising in the 69th minute for Lennon in their 1-1 draw during regulation time.
