FM Shreyas Smith secures 3rd Grand Prix title this year

Fresh from his second appearance at the World Chess Olympiad, Jamaica's number three-ranked player Fide Master (FM) Shreyas Smith continued his superb performance in the Jamaica Chess Federation's (JCF) Grand Prix series, with a remarkable 6/6 performance to defend his Dr Harold Chan Chess Open at Eden Gardens Resort and Spa, October 19-22.

In reacting to winning, FM Smith said: “I don't think anyone else has ever won all three events consecutively in the history of the JCF Grand Prix series, so I feel really accomplished.”

Smith is now hoping to build on this feat by preparing for the final Grand Prix event for the year, the Frederick Cameron Open December 13-16.

Second place was shared by four players who all finished on 4.5 points each. After tiebreakers were employed, Nicaraguan FM Juan Jose Pineda was second, Candidate Master (CM) Paul Brooks was third, National Master (NM) Raheem Glaves from St Catherine High was fourth and veteran player Michael Diedrick placed fifth.

Campion College student Raehanna Brown was the top female player, ending up in 12th place overall even though she was ranked 34th at the start of the tournament.

Defending champion of the FIDE under 1600 category, Jamaica College student Tevin Campbell,took the category with a well-executed 5.5/6 performance. In addition to the title win, he captured first in his rating class 1400-1599.

Second place was a highly contested affair as four players finished on five points each. Jaheim Smart at just nine years old and unrated, had an amazing performance and placed second after tiebreakers, followed by top female player in the category Arielle Mckoy in third, Shamir Martin in fourth and Justin Watts who was undefeated in the tournament in fifth.
