Frater's ninth puts Switchbacks in sight of playoffs

Monday, October 02, 2017

NEW YORK, USA (CMC) —Jamaican Kevaughn Frater scored his ninth goal of the season as Colorado Springs Switchbacks beat Orange County SC 2-1 on Saturday, to keep alive their hopes of a spot in the play-offs of the United Soccer League.

Playing at home at Weidner Field, the Switchbacks took the lead against the run of play in the 22nd minute when Taesong Kim headed in Masta Kacher's corner kick.

Six minutes later, the 22-year-old Frater doubled the home side's lead when he clinically finished off a fluid counter-attack.

Switchbacks held the two-goal cushion at half-time, but watched as the visitors hit back 10 minutes following the resumption, when Irvin Parra's header from Rodrigo Pacheco's right-sided corner found its target.

Goalkeeper Charlie Lyon then made two outstanding saves from Frater in the 72nd minute to preserve the scoreline, but Orange County failed to find the equaliser.

The victory was the 11th of the season for the Switchbacks who are just outside the play-off zone in ninth in the Western Conference on 38 points.

Orange County, meanwhile, are one below on a point less.

At ONEOK Field in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Turks and Caicos Islands striker Billy Forbes got the insurance goal as San Antonio FC defeated Tulsa Roughnecks 2-0, a victory which also saw the visitors enhance their play-offs prospects.

Following a goaless first half, Nkongho O'Ojong opened the scoring in the 70th minute when he nodded Michael Reed's corner kick past goalkeeper Fabian Cerda.

Forbes found the back of the net two minutes from the end when he raced on to a nicely weighted pass across the penalty box from Jamaican Omar Gordon, to calmly slot home from the left side.

San Antonio are now fourth in the Western Conference on 55 points from 15 wins.

On Wednesday, Jamaican Cory Burke was also on target, scoring for Bethlehem Steel in a 2-2 draw with Tampa Bay Rowdies at home at Goodman Stadium.
