Chris Williams

PALO ALTO, California (CANA) -- Jamaica's Chris Williams won the men's 200 metres at the IAAF US Open Grand Prix athletics meet where American, Stacy Dragila, twice broke her own world pole vault record on Saturday.

Williams, the reigning Central American and Caribbean (CAC) champion over the distance, won in 20.52 seconds and now leads the Grand Prix 200-metre men's standings.

Dragila broke her world record of 4.70 metres with a clearance of 4.71 metre before lifting the mark to 4.81 metres.

Jamaica also had top-three finishes from Mardrea Hyman in the women's 1,500 metres, and Juliet Campbell, who chased Olympic champion, Marion Jones, in the women's 200 metres.

In the men's 200, Williams, who had been second at the Brazil Grand Prix last month, outran Americans Kevin Little (20.56) and Jon Drummond (20.68) with his fellow Jamaican, Ricardo Williams, fourth in 20.93 seconds.

Williams heads the event's Grand Prix table with 24 points, over American Shawn Crawford (19).

Campbell, who won the World Indoor title in Portugal three months ago, followed Jones home in a repeat of last month's Prefontaine finish.

Jones won in 22.70 seconds, beating Campbell (22.97).

From three meet appearances, Campbell is the 200 series leader with 22 points, six ahead of Jones, who has had two Grand Prix appearances so far this season.

Hyman became the women's 1,500-metre series leader when she clocked four minutes 07.74 seconds for third behind Americans Regina Jacobs (4:04.85) and Marla Runyan (4:06.31).

Two Jamaica-born competitors were seventh and eighth in the women's 400 hurdles won by Britain's Natasha Danvers in 55.37 seconds.

Karlene Haughton, now representing Canada, clocked 56.76 seconds, with 1992 Olympic silver medallist for the USA Sandra Farmer-Patrick, on the comeback trail, last in 58.28 seconds.

Dragila, 30, was very impressive in her pole vault success, and after securing the seventh outdoor world record of her career she had three good attempts at 4.88 metres.
