Santos rally to capture ML crown
LIVINGSTON SCOTT
Sunday, April 14, 2002

Boys' Town's Michael Alexander (right) tries to gain possession from Santos' Shawn Freckleton in the second-leg Major League final at Constant Spring yesterday. Santos triumphed 4-1 for a 5-4 aggregate win.

A double strike from Kingston College's 16 year-old Manning Cupper, Richard West, helped Santos to a remarkable 4-1 win over 10-man Boys' Town in an exciting and dramatic Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Major League second-leg final at Constant Spring yesterday.

Santos took the tie 5-4 on aggregate after losing the first leg 3-1. West netted in the 41st and 106th minute. Terrence Allen (38th) and Kevin McLeary (81st) got the others. Fitzroy Anglin scored for Boys' Town two minutes before the break.

Earlier, in the Syd Bartlett final, goals from Marlon Hibbert (1st), Lucien Chin (47th) and Kevon Bailey (75th) carried the University of the West Indies (UWI) to a 3-1 win over Rae Town in their second-leg final to take the title 5-2 on aggregate. Donovan Evans scored Rae Town's consolation goal nine minutes from time.

In the feature, Santos meant business from the start as the hard-kicking Allen rattled the post with a powerful free-kick from the edge of the area after five minutes.

Santos continued to dominate, but West and Fabian Nethersole wasted some easy chances before Allen beat Winston Lowe with a ferocious drive from 20 yards.

Santos increased the pressure and Nethersole should have scored twice two minutes later, but Lowe denied him both times. However, West was on hand to clean up the second time from point-blank range when Lowe failed to hold cleanly.

Anglin put Boys' Town back in front (4-3) on aggregate, heading home Michael Campbell's free-kick.

Santos continued where they left off in the second half, but Boys' Town were put under more pressure when they lost sweeper, Kirk Edwards, six minutes into the half to a second yellow card.

With eight minutes to go, McLeary calmly tapped home a low cross from 10 yards to tie the game 4-4 on aggregate.

Both teams produced good scoring chances in extra-time but it was West who found the winner after playing a one-two with Courtney Sinclair before firing past Lowe.

Boys' Town's coach, Andrew Pryce, thought his team did well with 10 men: "We played the last 70 minutes with 10 men, but I thought the team did well. After losing that man, it was only a matter of time before it happened but we battled well ... we just came up short," he said.

"Like I said last week when I assessed the game, I said we would win," said Santos' Carlton Dennis. "We worked hard in training this week and we were much sharper. I'm just happy to know I'm the one to lift Santos from the Major League."
