Dr Mark Newnham, the newly appointed junior golf chairman for the Jamaica Golf Association (JGA), walked away with the Jamaica Match Play championship when he defeated Rory Jardine on the 33rd hole of the 36-hole final round.
The Match Play competition was played at the Constant Spring Golf Club over a one-week period.
Four handicapper Newnham started slowly in the qualifying round, finishing tied in sixth position with 80 and was pitted against the ninth-place finisher, Dave Lyn for the 16-competitior championship flight.
Lyn was defeated in a sudden-death play-off on the 19th hole in the first round, following which Newnham took on Ossie Lee for the second round.
Supersenior and former JGA president, Lee, posed no major threat and was defeated on the 12th hole with five holes remaining.
Lincoln Williams, Newham's third round opponent, was also defeated in a sudden-death on the 19th, clearing the way for the new chairman to advance to the finals and to a 4 /3 victory over Jardine.
Jardine, who aced the qualifying round with four-over-par 74, defeated defending champion, Cleo Taylor, and Carl Bruce to reach the final.
Junior team representative, Lawrence Bailey, clinched the title in the men's flight section after going three up on Louis Lyn with two holes remaining in the final round. The flight was played over 18 holes.
Bailey defeated Howard Mckenzie, TV Allen and Paul Spencer to reach the final and secure his trophy.
The ladies trophy went to Barbara Sampson, who defeated Pearl Phipps in the 18-hole final round three up with two holes to play.
The next JGA event will be the Jamaica Corporate Championship which will be held on February 7 at the Caymanas Golf & Country Club.
The event will be preceded by a Registration/Cocktail function at the Cable & Wireless national golf academy on February 6, starting at 5:30 pm.
