Morant Bay High School, after spending 13 years in the doldrums, emerged winners of the two-day JN/JPS Eastern Athletic Track and Field Championships with 649.5 points at the Stadium East field yesterday.

The winners finished ahead of defending champions Oberlin High, 480; Glengoffe, 350.5; Yallahs, 318.5, and Seaforth High, 215.33, who completed the top five.

Headed by champion male athlete, Wilbert Walker, the St Thomas champions easily triumphed after some truly outstanding performances.

Walker broke two records. He cleared 2.0 metres in winning the Class One high jump - the first athlete to achieve that mark in the history of Eastern Champs - and leaped 6.88m in the long jump.

He then clocked 15.4 seconds in capturing the 110-metre hurdles to emerge as one of three triple winners at the meet.
Overall, Walker landed four gold medals.

Morant Bay also had another triple gold medallist in Mickiesha Harris, who captured the Class Three long jump, the 100 and 200 metres events in 5.44m, 12.75 seconds and 26.20 seconds, respectively.

Meanwhile, Andre Drummonds of Glengoffe High also took three events. He first set a new record in the Class One 1500 metres, clocking 4 minutes 5.43 seconds, before returning to capture the 800 in 1:58.29.

Finally, he clocked 16 minute and 50 seconds in romping the gruelling 5,000m before running a sterling leg to ensure his team won the 1600 metre relay.

Morant Bay won both Boys' and Girls' sections.
