Jamaica College (JC) copped their first cricket title in 21 years when they defeated Meadowbrook High on first innings in the final of the First Global Bank-sponsored "A" League at Melbourne Oval yesterday. JC, whose last title was achieved in 1983, scored 245 on Wednesday's first day. Meadowbrook replied with 187. Batting a second time, JC were bowled out for 162 at 5:30 pm, at which time the game was called off.
"I was very proud of the cricket and the support both teams received over the two days," said winning coach, David Robertson. "I was very nervous when Meadowbrook was batting as they were playing very good cricket. Where we had the slight edge was that we concentrated a little longer when we batted.
"We now look to the Grace Shield semi-final round where we hope to pull off a few surprises," he added.
Resuming the day on 52-2 and needing a further 194 to capture first innings, Meadowbrook made a brave attempt, but fell short of their target.
Pacers Elvis Watson, 6-49, and spinner, Oliver Walker, 2-35, led the way for the boys for Old Hope Road to gain the advantage.
Both schools will contest the Grace Shield semi-final round, which begins on April 6, and will include champions Norman Manley High, Jonathan Grant High, Spanish Town High and St Catherine. The Grace Shield champion will represent the corporate area in the all-island Spaulding Cup.
