Fists of fury at freestyle tourney
By HURBUN WILLIAMS Observer staff reporter
Sunday, May 30, 2004

Oral 'Tickarus' Willis, Dennis 'Simpson' Eckart and Frank Otto recorded impressive wins in freestyle martial arts action on Friday at Mas Camp in New Kingston.

The novel warrior-type street-fighting contests between adversaries using either their boxing, martial arts or wrestling skills, were put on by the Freestyle Fight Club.
The 11-fight programme excited the fair-size crowd but with better preparation by the fighters it could develop into quality entertainment.

Willis, Eckart and Otto were in good physical condition and seemed prepared to go the expected three rounds of 15 minutes each. Other combatants turned up noticeably under-prepared for their matches.
The combatants exchanged blows in a 20 x 20ft and 8ft high steel cage and fought to the bitter end until the last man standing was declared the winner.

Willis and Eckart who studied capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian dance form that incorporates self-defence manoeuvres, for seven years were devastating.
But 20 year-old Otto of Spanish Town was decisive. He was declared winner over Garnet Raymond after only 21 seconds, by referee Slavik Moskalev.
Willis needed one minute 16 seconds of the first round to put down a spirited but outclassed Paul Hayden.

Eckart was declared the winner over a bleeding Kayon Kerr after referee Moskalev stopped the contest in three minutes 39 seconds of the first round. Both fighters were locked in battle on the ground for nearly two minutes during which time a flurry of punches and kicks were thrown. During the exchanges Kerr received a blow to the face.
Of the seven fights that were scheduled to go three rounds of five minutes each, only two got past the first round. Tyrone Marshall of Black River beat Omar 'Viper' Daley of Kingston, with two minutes three seconds remaining in the second round in the penultimate fight of the night.

While the fight appeared to be even at that point, referee Moskalev awarded victory to Marshall as Daley, on elbows and knees with his head down, failed to respond to his command to continue fighting.
In the closing fight, after the first round, Gary Gordon failed to answer the bell for the second round and his opponent Mark Johnson's hand was raised in triumph by the referee.

Only the first fight between Kirby Ann Jump of St Ann's Bay and Sharnet Burton of Kingston went the distance of three rounds of one minute each. In a close contest, Burton was declared the winner.
The second fight went to Nicolia Francis over Patrice Feanny in two minutes 15 seconds of the second round after Feanny failed to continue. In the third, Jerome Thompson took only 50 seconds to better Tavar Mighty; Andae Walters was the winner over Keno Dennis; and Jermaine DeLattibudiere was the winner of the fifth over Leo Francis.
