"Sports brings out the best and the worst in any community or nation, as it's at that time that individuals unite as a race to utilise their courage, physical and intellectual skills and knowledge to bring victory at all cost."
That was the opinion of quest speaker Keith Noel, principal of St Jago High School in Spanish Town, at the Central St Catherine Football League's 10th annual awards presentation at Cecil's Restaurant last Saturday.
According to Noel: "Cricket was an Englishman's game, but after it was taught to the black man they learnt it well and formed the West Indies team and played the Englishmen and beat them at Lord's after the war, bridging the gap of inferiority complex... as black people walked with their heads held high as this... gave them a feeling of self-worth."
The league administered two major competitions - the Under-17 and the Division Two tournaments, divided into Western and Central - which have been sponsored by Cable & wireless for 10 consecutive seasons.
The winner of the Central Division was McCooks Pen, while the Bodles Strikers walked away with the Western championship.
The winner of the knock-out competition was National Irrigation in the Western league, while Raiders captured the Central equivalent.
Meadows FC walked away with the championship trophy in the Under -17 league, with best goalkeeper going to Terece McPherson. The best defender award went to Dale Ellis of Meadows, while Eddie Flemming of Central and Leon Balter of Western also won prizes.
The best midfielder award in the Under-17 competition went to Kemar Munroe of Police Youth Club, Dowen Brown of Western, and Central's Oneil Sammond.
Horace Sharpe of Meadows was the leading goal-scorer for the Under-17 competition, while Shawn Lee received the award for the Western league, and Abraham Henry for the Central.
