Foster, Powell to do battle in Switzerland
CMC
Friday, June 25, 2004

Brigitte Foster

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (CMC) - Jamaicans Brigitte Foster and Asafa Powell are expected to be in action at the IAAF Super Grand Prix track & field meet on
July 6.

Powell is the first sprinter this season to legally break the 10-second barrier with his 9.99 seconds clocking in an invitational race at the Jamaican national junior championships on June 12.

Powell's time was a personal best (PB) beating the previous mark of 10.02 secs last year and he has also run his 200 metres PB this season of 20.10 secs.

The women's 100 metres hurdles will see Foster, the World Championships silver medallist and the fastest, in the world last year, face reigning Olympic silver medallist and European champion Glory Alozie of Spain.

Foster will be looking for a good time to assert herself among the likes of counterpart Delloreen Ennis-London, World Champion Perdita Felicien of Canada, and veteran Gail Devers of the United States, who have all posted good times so far this season.

The men's 5000 metres is also expected to be interesting where Kenya's John Kibowen will face the rampant Kenenisa Bekele.

The Kenyan Kibowen, who finished fourth in the World 5000 metres in Paris last year, has a PB of 12 minutes, 54.07 secs, but will have his work cut out staying in touch, let alone beating the Ethiopian Bekele, who set new world record figures in Hengelo at the end of May of 12 mins, 37.35 secs.

An intriguing match-up will be the women's high jump, where South Africa's Hestrie Cloete, the reigning double World champion, will have to be at her very best to defeat Russia's World Indoor champion, Yelena Slesarenko.

At the European Cup last weekend, the Russian jumped 2.04 metres, confirming the form with which she won her World Indoor title.
