2nd title for EXCELSIOR
Football
By Jermaine Lannaman Observer staff reporter
Saturday, November 27, 2004

It's a dream that is now getting very close to reality.
After winning the Manning Cup last Saturday, Excelsior High took another step towards realising their goal of a first ever schoolboy triple when they defeated Camperdown High 3-0 in the final of the Walker Cup Knockout at Drewsland yesterday.

In a dominant display reminiscent of the 3-1 win over Calabar in the Manning Cup final, the champions, were propelled to victory on a first half strike from Andrew Morris, one each from Anthony Christie and Ricardo Ximines in the second.
It was Excelsior's sixth hold on the title.

"We are happy we were able to complete the double. We knew from the start of the season that it would be difficult given the weakness of our bench. But after rotating several of our players we were able to come up with winning combinations," said winning coach Leebert Halliman.
"It's now all about the Olivier Shield, which I know will be tough as Glenmuir looks awesome and Frome is equally good.

"However, whosoever we play we will be fighting. Excelsior have never won the triple so I personally feel it would be a great achievement," Halliman said.

The match was a one-sided affair with Excelsior using their physical and tactical superiority to good effect.
After controlling the opening exchanges, they took the lead in the 18th minute when Morris, finding himself with room, fired a swirling shot off the outside of his boot.

This lead was maintained until two minutes in the second half when Norado Brown was brought down in the penalty area. This gave Christie the chance to put his team further ahead and after 'wronging' the 'keeper he put his team 2-0 up.

With Excelsior having established themselves as a potent force, the goal seemed to push Camperdown further on the back-foot and in the 67th minute Ximines scored a peach to effectively end the match.

Shrugging off two defenders, the slippery forward was given room to shoot and fired home from the edge of the area.
Camperdown coach, Barrington Gaynor, thought his team tried but "were defeated by a team that was that much better than them."

Excelsior, undefeated this season, now awaits the winner of the rural area daCosta Cup which will be contested today between Glenmuir High and Frome Technical.

However, before the Olivier Shield nine of their players will take part in two match series between a Jamaica all-schools team and their Trinidad and Tobago counterparts in that country. The other nine players of the squad will come from the winning daCosta Cup team. The Jamaican all-schools team will leave on Thursday.

Meanwhile action continued in the Malta Under-14 and Under-16 competitions yesterday. Scores: Norman Manley
