Wignall, Beckford, Clarke win in Germany
CMC
Sunday, February 06, 2005

ERFURT, Germany (CMC) - Jamaicans Maurice Wignall, James Beckford and Davian Clarke logged fine victories at the 11th TEAG indoor meeting on Friday night.

Clarke and fourth-place finishers at last year's Athens Olympics, Wignall and Beckford, were among the stars of the meet that also saw Slovenia's Jolanda Ceplak register an easy win in the 800 metres.

In the men's 60-metre hurdles, Wignall won his heat in 7.60 seconds before posting a world-leading 7.54 to capture the final ahead of Austria's Elmar Lichtenegger (7.56) and German Thomas Blaschek (7.63).

Wignall's 2005 world best was narrowly bettered a few hours later by American Allen Johnson (7.53) at the Millrose Games in New York.
Beckford left it late for his winning effort in the men's long jump, coming up with his top jump of 8.01 metres in his fifth try to defeat Germans Andreas Pohle (7.73 metres) and Nils Winter (7.70m).

In the A-Section of the men's 400 metres, two-time Olympian Clarke gave Jamaica a third win at the meet.
Clarke sped to a 21.73 200-split but could not carry through the effort for a fast time and finished in 46.38 seconds, to beat German Sebastien Gatzka (47.20).

Ceplak followed up her unchallenged victory at the Boston Games a week earlier with another win.
She reached the 600-metre mark in one minute 30.11 seconds, with Belgian Sandra Stals stalking her.

But Ceplak's strength prevailed and she stopped the clock in a world leading 2:00.62, with Stals second in 2:01.03.
