Canadians rout Haiti in CONCACAF U17s
CMC
Saturday, May 21, 2005

CULIACAN, Mexico (CMC) - Haiti, the last Caribbean hope in the CONCACAF Under-17 world qualifying final round, crashed out of contention in a 5-0 loss to Canada at the Carlos Gonzalez y Gonzalez Stadium on Thursday evening.

Facing a game that they had to win to keep their dreams of the FIFA Under-17 championship in Peru alive, Canada's Under-17s rose to the occasion and outpaced and outworked a very athletic Haitian team.

Shane Lammie scored a goal on either side of half-time, while Michael Pereira, Jonathan Beaulieu-Bourgault and Marcus Haber netted Canada's other goals to hand the Haitians their second defeat.

Canada's five goals are the most scored by an Under-17 Canadian team in competition since 1999, when Canada defeated Trinidad and Tobago 6-0 in San Salvador.

In the evening's second encounter, Edgar Andrade, Giovanni Dos Santos and Efrain Juarez all scored for Mexico in the 3-0 win over Honduras.

The CONCACAF Under-17 Group B concludes today when Haiti meet Honduras and Canada tackle Mexico, who had beaten Haiti 2-0 in Tuesday's opening schedule.

The Group B winners will join the USA, who won the CONCACAF U-17 Group A in Heredia, Costa Rica, last month, as the Confederation's automatic qualifiers to the 2005 FIFA Under-17 World Championship in Peru from September 16 to October 2.

The second-place finishers from Group B will meet Group A's runner-up, Costa Rica in a home-and-away play-off series for the third CONCACAF berth to the FIFA Under-17 event.

Cuba had represented the Caribbean in the Group A qualifiers, but were ousted after failing to win a game.
