HAMILTON, Bermuda (CMC) - Former West Indies coach Gus Logie is considering staying on as coach of Bermuda, to take the international cricket minnows into their historic appearance at the World Cup Finals in 2007, the Royal Gazette newspaper has reported.
Logie guided Bermuda through the International Cricket Council (ICC) qualifying series in Ireland earlier this month to Cricket World Cup (CWC) 2007 in the Caribbean, and the 44 year-old Trinidadian is contemplating extending his contract beyond the six-month arrangement with the Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB).
He had signed the contract to prepare Bermuda for the qualifying series and is now mulling over his immediate future with the team.
"My family is here and we are talking about it. Once the Board and I can come to an agreement, I'm certain it wouldn't be too long before something concrete happens," Logie told the Gazette.
The Bermuda squad has been given a tremendous welcome home after qualifying for the World Cup Finals for the first time and Logie has clearly been moved by the national response.
"It's a blessing and it just shows you the passion and the love for the game that the people of Bermuda have," said Logie, following an afternoon of public celebrations to mark Bermuda's qualification for cricket's biggest tournament.
Logie, who played international cricket for the West Indies from 1981 to 1993 before launching a coaching career, told the Gazette that his experience so far with Bermuda has encouraged him to continue.
"Sure I certainly feel good working with the guys. They have inspired me as well to go on to do more and better things and I'm looking forward to the partnership continuing," he said.
As West Indies coach between April 2003 and September 2004, Logie's success was only moderate, although he finished his stint with a memorable title success at the ICC Champions trophy tournament in England.
Before taking over as West Indies senior coach just over two years ago, when current coach Bennett King, of Australia, had initially declined an offer, Logie was a successful coach of several West Indies Youth teams including winning the Costcutter Under-15 world title in July 2000 with a squad that included Denesh Ramdin, Ravi Rampaul, and Xavier Marshall, who have since earned picks in the West Indies senior team.
