Latoya Greaves tops 100m hurdles

Jamaicans Latoya Greaves and Natasha Ruddock swept the top two places in the 100m hurdles at the XIII Pan American Junior Championships in Windsor, Canada, yesterday.
Greaves clocked a wind-aided (2.1m/s) 13.38 seconds to strike gold, ahead of compatriot Ruddock (13.42), while Canada's Genevieve Thibault (13.50) got the bronze.

Greaves and Ruddock have joined Gillian Russell and Keisha Brown as Jamaicans to take the medal podium at these championships. Russell was a silver medallist at the 1991 Pan American Juniors in Kingston, Jamaica, and Brown was the bronze medallist at the 2003 championships in Bridgetown, Barbados.
In the 400 metres, Sonita Sutherland, Jason Edwards, and Leford Green have booked their places in today's finals.
Sutherland timed 53.83 seconds for third place in the first semi-final, after USA's Natasha Hastings (52.12) and Canadian Carlene Muir (52.91).
The other Jamaican, Anastasia Le-Roy, failed to advance as she was sixth in the other semi-final in a time of 56.66 seconds.
In the men's section, Edwards was third in the first semi-final when he ran 48.66 to advance. Green finished second in the other semi-final to progress after running 47.20 seconds.
USA's Justin Oliver will enter the final with the fastest time, as he won Green's semi-final in 46.80 seconds.
Theon O'Connor and Stafford McFarlane, meanwhile, failed to advance to the 800m final.
O'Connor clocked one minute 52.32 seconds to finish fourth in the second semi-final. Chile's Pablo Navarrete won that semi in 1:51.67, ahead of American Jacob DeBois, 1:51.87.
In the third semi-final, McFarlane (1:55.95) was also fourth in the race won by Venezuelan Gilder Barbonza in 1:54.18.
Peru's Cesar Barquero won the first semi-final in 1:51.14, the fastest time going into the final.
At press time, Schillonie Calvert and Markino Buckley had qualified for last night's final of the women's 100 metres and men's 110m hurdles, respectively.
